Essential nutrient, component of heme and nonheme iron proteins; works as cofactor of several essential enzymes, including cytochromes, which are involved in electron transport

Indicated for treatment and/or prevention of iron deficiency anemia

Hypersensitivity

Hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis, hemolytic anemia

  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Stomach carmping
  • epigastric pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Discolored urine
  • Dark stools
  • Heartburn
  • Staining of teeth
  • Abdominal pain

Do not exceed recommended dose

The type of anemia and underlying cause or causes should be determined before initiating therapy; since anemia may be a result of a systemic disturbance, such as recurrent blood loss, the underlying cause or causes should be corrected, if possible

Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6; keep this product out of reach of children; in case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately

Iron may cause stool to darken in color; inform patient of the effect

Pregnancy

If pregnant, or planning to become pregnant contact physician, or healthcare provider before using this product or continuing use

Lactation

Contact physician or healthcare provider before using or continuing to use

Adults

150-300 mg PO q8hr

 

Pediatric

Treatment

  • Preterm: 2-4 mg Fe/kg/day PO qDay divided q12hr; not to exceed 15 mg/day  

  • Children: 3-6 mg Fe/kg/day PO qDay divided q12hr

Prophylaxis

  • Preterm: 2 mg Fe/kg/day PO PO qDay divided q8hr; not to exceed 15 mg/day  

  • Children: 1-2 mg Fe/kg/day PO qDay divided q8hr; not to exceed 15 mg/day

  • Aged >10 years

    • Males: 2 mg/day Fe PO

    • Females: 5 mg/day Fe PO
