Ophthalmic antiviral preparation with activity against herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2, vaccinia virus, and some adenovirus strains; used for primary keratoconjunctivitis and recurrent epithelial keratitis due HSV types 1 and 2; used for epithelial keratitis that has not responded to idoxuridine or vidarabine.

Indicated for the treatment of primary keratoconjunctivitis and recurrent epithelial keratitis due to herpes simplex virus, types 1 and 2

Hypersensitivity

  • Transient burning/stinging
  • Palpebral edema
  • Superficial punctate keratopathy
  • Epithelial keratopathy
  • Stromal edema
  • Keratitis sicca
  • Hyperemia
  • Increased IOP
  • Hypersensitivity reactions

Cosnider other Tx if no improvement after 7 days or incomplete reepithelialization after 14 days

Use >21 days should be avoided because of potential ocular toxicity

Inactive against bacteria, fungi & Chlamydia

Pregnancy Category: C

Lactation: unlikely to be distributed into breast milk; use caution

Children
