Magnesium hydroxide is an oral saline laxative; also known as milk of magnesia
Used most commonly for occasional constipation in adult and pediatric patients 2 years and older
Can be used as an antacid although it is usually combined with an aluminum- or calcium-containing antacid for this use

Indicated for the occasional treatment of constipation.

For the temporary relief of pyrosis (heartburn), upset stomach (dyspepsia), and/or acid indigestion.

Renal failure

Existing electrolyte imbalance

Appendicitis symptoms or acute surgical abdomen

Myocardial damage or heart block

Fecal impaction or rectal fissures

Intestinal obstruction or perforation

Undiagnosed abdominal pain

  • Abdominal cramping
  • Diarrhea
  • Electrolyte imbalance
  • Hypotension
  • Muscle weakness
  • Respiratory depression

Use with caution in renal insufficiency

Pregnancy category: A

Lactation: Use in nursing mothers appears to be safe

Consult package label; maximum daily dosage is age and product specific. Do not exceed recommended daily dosage in any 24 hour period.
