Description
Oral semisynthetic isoxazolyl antistaphylococcal penicillin. Most active of the isoxazolyl antistaphylococcal penicillins. Stable against penicillinase and active against many of the penicillinase-producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus. Clinical uses include skin and soft-tissue, bone and joint, respiratory tract, and urinary tract infections.
Indications
Indicated for Staphylococcus aureus infections
Indicated for the treatment of mastitis.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporins, imipenem
Initial treatment of severe infections
Concomitant live bacterial vaccines
Adverse Effects
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Anemia
- Elevated LFTs
- Fever
- Hypersensitivity
- Nephritis
- Pseudomembranous colitis
- Seizures with extremely high doses &/or renal failure
- Rash (maculopapular to exfoliative)
- Vomiting
- Vaginitis
Warnings
Monitor PT if patient is taking warfarin concurrently
Prolonged use may result in superinfection
Elimination of drug in neonates is slow; use caution

Pregnancy Category: B
Lactation: excreted in breast milk, use caution
Maximum Dosage
1 g/day PO per FDA-approved labeling; however, doses up to 2 g/day PO have been used off-label.
