Cyclopentolate is an anticholinergic agent that causes loss of accommodation and mydriasis; Phenylephrine is a sympathomimetic agent that causes vasoconstriction and mydriasis.
Used to produce mydriasis for ophthalmologic examination.
Patients should not drive or participate in hazardous activities while pupils are dilated.

For mydriasis induction for ophthalmic diagnostic procedures.

Untreated narrow-angle glaucoma

Hypersensitivity to any component

  • Blurred vision
  • Burning sensation in eye
  • Hypersensitivity reactions such as allergic conjunctivitis or dermatitis
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Headache or browache
  • Reactive hyperemia
  • Transient burning or stinging
  • Transient keratitis
  • Hypertension, tachycardia, palpitation, premature ventricular contractions, tachyarrhythmia, vasodilatation
  • Ataxia, confusion, occipital headache, psychotic disorder, raised intraocular pressure, seizure, trembling or tremors
  • Increased perspiration
  • Pallor or blanching

Reduce dose if used within 21 d of MAO inhibitors or TCAs

Wait 5 minutes between multiple drops (no >3 drops needed)

May cause false-normal tonometry readings, tonometry should be performed before phenylephrine is administered

Restrict to short term use (safety and efficacy of long-term use not established)

Use caution in Down syndrome (predisposed to angle-closure glaucoma)

Remove contact lenses prior to administration and wait 15 min before reinserting

The eldrely may be predisposed to increased intraocular pressure

May result in psychotic reactions and behavioral disturbances in children 30-45 min following instillation

Minimize absorption by using 1 drop of solution per eye and applying presure

Pregnancy Category: C

Lactation: Unknown if excreted in breast milk, use caution

Adults

3 drops/day per eye receiving dilation.

Geriatric

3 drops/day per eye receiving dilation.

Adolescents

3 drops/day per eye receiving dilation.

Children

Usual maximum is 2 drops/day per eye receiving dilation.

Infants

Usual maximum is 2 drops/day per eye receiving dilation.

Neonates

Safety and efficacy have not been established.
